Philip
Ang, is a Golf Clubmakers Association (GCA) USA
accredited professional clubmaker who passed the
club-making examination with distinction in one sitting.
He was awarded “Distinguished Clubmaker” in 1997 by
Golfsmith International Inc. USA.
Custom club-fitting is a science behind the game. A professional
clubmaker must not only be able to assemble a right club from component
design specifications, his theoretical and skill-fitting knowledge must
be matched by his intimate understanding of the golfing physics and the
practical aspects of executing a good golf swing.
In
my opinion, the golfing public cannot accept the fact that a good
clubmaker can be born of a passive golfer nor with just a sound and
strong technical background of club making. Since I do have an
acceptable level of proficiency in playing (handicap 8 within first two
years of playing golf in 1985), I decided to take on the challenge of
certifying myself as a teaching professional through the United States
Golf Teachers Federation (USGTF) certification programme for which I
also achieved the stringent test in one sitting in 1997. Being a
certified teaching professional also enhanced my dimensions in
club-fitting. It is also important to keep pace with equipment
development in the golfing world as many golfers would want to own the
latest equipment.
As
part of my continuing passion for dynamism and scaling new heights in my
profession, I decided to vie for the prestigious International Clubmaker
of the Year award. Amidst a very stringent and high profiled
competition, I was conferred the Winner of GCA International Clubmaker
of the Year, 1999-2000. This is a very special and treasured award as I
am the first Asian, and a definite first for Singapore, to break the
domination of what had been a non-Asian competence for the last decade.
To
enhance my spectrum of experience, I undertook, passed and been awarded
the USGTF Certified Master Teaching Professional. This is the highest
level of USGTF certifications. As a recognition of my skills and
experience, I have also been appointed by USGTF-Asia as their USGTF-Asia
Certification Course Lecturer & Examiner.
A
good clubmaker needs to have an in-depth knowledge of both the hard and
soft aspects of golf, ranging from the experience of the basic tools
used, material science/metallurgy of making golf equipment components
coupled with the understanding of golf swing bio-mechanic and also the
understanding of golfers’ needs and wants. The technical know-how
incorporated with the intimate understanding of physiological attributes
of my prospects can enable me to enhance and improve a golfer’s game
within his athletic and physical abilities through a proper club-fitting
regime.
It
is my pleasure to present to you my services and competencies in helping
you search for the ‘dream’ clubs to elevate your golf game to the
highest horizon.
